Through material studies, I engage questions of the body’s capacity to resist failure and the opening afforded by that process. Paper carries its history visibly, as skin bears marks of time and abrasion as scars, so too does paper. Born with a cleft lip and palate, I have long been weary of skin, cut and torn. My body has been opened, rebuilt, and mended with tape, time, and my own bones. These experiences echo in periodic, quiet, aches, and inform my interest in the memory of material things. As I prepare my body to form another, I see my relationship to skin stretched. Old fears resurface, guided by the desire for something which is born of the body’s will. I have witnessed it; the body takes over and imbues the woman with a strength I do not have words for. Yet, without resistance, such force can be destructive. It is the relationship to the material that matters. This series is the result of my rumination on the precarious relationship between desire and resistance, as it pertains to the body, and as illustrated through a material to which it is married in metaphor. The resulting cairns, made of ceramic forms, are contemplations on the relationships between failure, healing, and vulnerability within the body. The cairns are made to function as counterpoints to archival inkjet prints of unfixed cyanotype paper hung low on the walls. In concert, the cairns and photographic field of blue are a portal into a dialogue between the sacred place and the problematic body. Praise of Shadows (published 1933), champions the traditional use of materials within domestic spaces and the impact of a recently opened Japan. Speaking of the delight in viewing lacquerware in a dimly lit space, he writes “it’s florid patterns recede into the darkness, conjuring in their stead an inexpressible aura of depth and mystery, of overtones but partly suggested.” In Tanizaki’s world, shadows heighten the sensory experience of space and objects. “We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the pattern of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.” &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This ongoing series, which borrows its name from Tanizaki’s seminal work, is the product of a practice of looking. In capturing moments of shadow and light, I attempt to make tangible the desire to be moved by something. In our increasingly click-share-post culture, the art of the reproduction is simultaneously more pervasive and more diluted than it was nearly a century ago. That brand of aloneness creeps up from the path and into you in a way that brings you back to yourself. I am looking for those spaces where in loosing something—something else is gained. These moments of realization are gifts of awakeness. We carry them within until they too fade away. Nothing is permanent.This work, Notes on Loss, was a direct result of these thoughts at a time of mourning. The silence that follows loss is the harbinger of new life. It was in this space that I became enveloped in the idea of thin places and with them the way in which the sacred, which is so intangible, can be stumbled upon in nondescript spaces and minute gestures.We have these moments of connection: with a stranger, with a place that takes you in in that moment and cradles you until everything falls away and all you have is what the sunlight feels like on your face after days of endless clouds. In those moments we are present. From awake to awake,Our journey together does not end.* In 2010 I traveled to the grasslands of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, China. I wanted to hear the folk songs of Gesar, an 11th century enlightened warrior king, and to photograph the extended families of the Genong Village. The families that form Genong are Khampa Tibetan nomads and proud descendants of Gesar. For the next three years I spent the summer months photographing, living and working with this clan. The families in Genong move three times a year. The cold winter months are spent in stone houses in Gerta, a valley near Lhagang, a small town whose residents mostly consist of former nomads, monks, and the elderly. The warmest months are spent in yak hair tents high up in the summer pasture, Dashika. This is considered the happiest time of the year. The grass is plentiful. The yaks are healthy and milk, cheese, and butter are fresh. In late July, a horse festival is held by each village. Lungta, a wind horse ceremony when new prayer flags are raised, begins the event, followed by trick horseback riding and races. I came to the grasslands for Gesar, but fell in love with the mountain and pastures. Time moves slowly in the grasslands. Days blend together until the pattern of herding, milking, and drinking tea are broken with a visitor or the death of a yak.
